The University of Auckland was established in 1883 in Auckland, New Zealand. It was earlier a constituent college of University of New Zealand. It is made up of eight faculties in over six campuses and around 40,000 students. It offers courses for graduate level as well as postgraduate level.

When the university started it was housed in disused jail and a courthouse. It had just 95 students and teaching staff of four.The University of Auckland is a leading University of New Zealand. In 2010 QS World University ranked it at 68th position among the top world Universities.

Campus

The University of Auckland has six campuses. All the campuses are situated in Auckland Region and Northland Region. Following are the details

  • Auckland CBD- This campus comprises the major population of students and faculties. It is spread over 16 hectares.
  • Tamaki Campus- Spread over 32 hectares in Glen Innes, it was established in the year 1991.  The campus offers degrees in Environmental Science, Sports Science, Health, Wine Science, communications and technology, food and technology and materials and manufacturing.
  • Leigh Marine Laboratory is the marine campus.
  • Tai Tokerau Campus also offers Education related courses
  • Manukau Institute of Technology- some education courses are offered here as well
  • Grafton Campus- Located opposite Auckland City Hospital, this campus offers School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences as well as Department of Optometry.
  • Epsom Campus- is the base for faculty of education. It offers courses in Teacher Education and social services.

Transport and Location

  • There are shuttle bus services between the city and the campuses like that of Tamak Innovation Campus shuttle bus. It runs regularly during week days. Trains also connect Britmart to Glen Innes
  • The public bus service has several routes passing through city campuses.
  • Ferries connect the central city to the North shore. Cycling though is the cheapest and great way to get around. It is also an ecological option. Combining cycling with other modes of transportation like ferries and trains is easier. There is ample of cycle parking available in the campus areas.
  • The next best thing to keep you fit is to walk. If you live near by the campus area walking seem to be the best option.
