Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology is a ISO 9001 certified, NZQA approved Category 1 tertiary education provider of New Zealand. NMIT is situated in the Nelson / Marlborough region of New Zealand at the top of South Island. This region of New Zealand is very beautiful and is conducive to studies and is desirable for living.

NMIT is a government funded institute. Approximately 3,500 equivalent full time students join NMIT each year. Students come and enjoy the beaches, scenery, culture and education opportunities offered. The institute offers more than 90 courses across a wide range of study areas at certificate, diploma and degree level. The institute collaborates with industry and business representatives to formulate the most updated and relevant training modules. NMIT also has expertise in innovation and research. NMIT helps businesses and other institutes in solving their problems. The applied business programme of NMIT publishes a book of case studies every year. The academic staff at NMIT is also actively engaged in conducting research and their works are also published in various reports and  journals.


There are two main campuses of Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. They are:

  • Nelson Campus - There are more than 3000 students who study in this campus each year. This campus is the larger of the two campuses. The campus is easy to navigate. The students can easily enjoy the city life while studying here as the campus is very close to shopping places, bars and cafes. The campus houses the "Creative Industries" building. This building is a fully digitally equipped media, design and arts facility. It also houses the Applied Technology building. The campus also has technologies for maritime simulation.
  • Malborough Campus - This is the smaller of the two campuses. The Malborough campus has beauty salon, trades and carpentry workshops, an onsite vineyard, hair salon, café and library. This campus specializes in courses that support the local industry like Viticulture. The "Viticulture course", in addition to the onsite vineyard, boasts of a winery, wine tasting room and labratories. The Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering courses of NMIT are housed in RNZAF Woodbourne air force base. The base is only a 10 minutes’ drive from Blenheim.

Student Facilities

  • Accommodation - There is on campus accommodation option for students from outside the Nelson region. The Nikau apartments have 42 furnished apartments. Student Support Services also arrange for homestays.
  • Cafeterias - Cafe Ake Ake and Cafe Ginko are present in Nelson and Malborough campuses respectively.
  • Student Association SANITI - It provides advocacy, representation and services to all the students of NMIT.
  • Child Care - The centre is present in the Nelson campus and is licensed for taking care of 9 infants and 28 young children.
  • Computer Service - Most of the campus is Wifi enabled. There is an IT service desk for handling the IT problems of the students.
  • Beauty and Hair Salon - Services are provided at low cost to students.
  • Student support services - Counselling support, Career guidance, Relationship counselling, referrals to government and community agencies are some of the services provided to the students of NMIT.
  • Rata Room - It is a restaurant where the students of cookery and hospitality are trained. Students and public can enjoy the meals prepared by hospitality and cookery students at discounted prices.
  • Library - The Library Learning Centre is accessible to all the students of NMIT.
  • Parking - There is free parking available at both the campuses.
  • Learning support - They provide services like visa applications, medical insurance, CV and cover letter service, e-learning support, Personalised learning strategies etc.

Transport and Location

The two campuses are well connected and easily accessible. The Malborough campus is just 20 minutes from the Blenheim city centre on foot. All the famous tourist sites of the region are accessible from the campus by car. The Nelson campus is situated in the city centre and therefore is conveniently accessible by bike or the bus service.
