What is OET exam?

The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language proficiency test specifically designed for healthcare professionals. It assesses the language skills of healthcare professionals who wish to practice in an English-speaking environment, especially in countries like Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, and Singapore. The test is recognized and accepted by various healthcare boards, councils, and universities in these countries.

Test Format

  1. Listening Sub-Test:

    • Duration: Approximately 45 minutes

    • Format: The listening sub-test is divided into three parts, each related to a healthcare scenario. Candidates listen to recorded healthcare professional-patient interactions and answer multiple-choice questions.

  1. Reading Sub-Test:

    • Duration: 60 minutes

    • Format: The reading sub-test consists of three parts, assessing the ability to understand and interpret healthcare-related texts. Part A includes texts about patient health; Part B involves reading and summarizing information from multiple texts, and Part C assesses the ability to understand opinions, attitudes, and main ideas in texts.

  1. Writing Sub-Test:

    • Duration: 45 minutes

    • Format: In the writing sub-test, candidates are required to write a letter based on a given healthcare-related situation. The letter is usually addressed to a colleague, patient, or supervisor, and it assesses the ability to communicate effectively in writing within a professional context.

  1. Speaking Sub-Test:

    • Duration: Approximately 20 minutes

    • Format: The speaking sub-test involves a one-on-one conversation with an interlocutor. It consists of two role-play scenarios related to a healthcare context. In each role-play, the candidate plays the role of the healthcare professional, while the interlocutor takes on the role of a patient or another healthcare professional.
